UPDATE: Hwy 16 partially reopens after Thanksgiving rockslide near Terrace
Traffic was disrupted on Oct. 9, as a rockslide halted east-bound movement on Hwy 16, west of Terrace
Thanksgiving travellers between Prince Rupert and Terrace faced significant delays Monday as a large rockslide blocked Hwy 16 near Shames Mountain. The disruption, which covered more than half of the east-bound lane, brought traffic to a standstill, throwing a wrench into holiday plans for dozens of motorists.
Terrace RCMP responded to the landslide and implemented crowd control measures to ensure the safety of those stranded, maintaining a secure perimeter around the affected area.
The roadway saw some relief at 4:00 p.m. PDT when officials reopened Hwy 16 to alternating traffic in one lane. While this move has allowed for gradual progress, travellers should anticipate continued delays due to the constrained flow of traffic.
Drive BC placed the rockslide approximately 20 to 21 kilometres west of Terrace. Although the roadway is partially accessible, travellers should remain cautious and patient, staying alert for further updates and potential alternate routes.
The exact cause of the rockslide has yet to be determined.
